Rules for Radicals # 6: A Good Tactic is one that your people enjoy “If your people aren’t having a ball doing it, there is something very wrong with the tactic.”

Rule 6, by Alinsky, I find particularly inspiring because it is somewhat reflective of the way that social media allows the individual to engage. The best way to have peopel engage in an issue that you feel to be particularity inspiring is to have them participate in the activity in their own way. By participating in the activity in their own way the individual will find an outlet that works for them the best. When the individual finds something that works for them and they are comfortable with they are happy. Participating in tactics in a way that is unique to the indiviudal allows them to enjoy the tactic.

Social media is a prime example of a media that allows the individual to create an enjoyable tactic. Through social media the individual can be informed of a cause and can consequentially decide if they would like to partitipate in the cause. Due to the customizable and interactive features of the web and social media the person can participate in tactics that work for them. An example would be using a blog to inform people of an issue or using twitter to co-ordinate a rally. These tactics become enjoyable because they are simple and easily accessible to the individual.

Fun is also an important aspect of a tactic. If the individual enjoys what they are doing they are more likely to continue participating in tactic. Enjoying an activity allows for more creativity and passion to be expressed in the activity. The more creative the individual becomes the more effective the tactic will be. If the tactic is not enjoyable the individual will not want to continue, and thus abandon the tactic. Enjoying what you're doing and maintaining a passion for it proves to aid in overall success.
